Now I’m in my 40’s, I’ve started making my own serums and elixirs for my skin from natural products, to try and naturally slow the aging process (as much as I can anyway!), but without using any harmful chemicals or fake ingredients, as there’s already too much of those in our environment and in our food and drink (even if you are super healthy and careful about what you imbibe).

This lovely facial serum is great for everyone’s skin, and it’s not just for mature skin, or for women. I find it to be incredibly rejuvenating and makes my skin feel so healthy and happy!

Everything I use is completely natural and can also be easily made 100% organic too, if you choose all organic ingredients.
Here’s the tools and ingredients I use, but you can change it up with your own personal choice of carrier oil and essential oils.

REMINDER: Make sure you only use a maximum of two drops of essential oil per 5ml of carrier oil. Also, always check the safety info for allergy advice and any contraindications with any medication you may be taking. It is also highly advisable to do patch test first too!

• A suitably sized pipette bottle (or similar) – I use blue glass ones, as they protect the oils from outside damaging sunlight, so that the essential oils don’t lose their efficiency so quickly. They also look really pretty;
• 20ml pure fractioned natural Coconut Oil (Cocos Nucifera) (as a carrier oil) – Coconut oil contains fatty acids, such as linoleic acid (vitamin F), which helps skin retain moisture, and lauric acid, which has antibacterial properties, that help to nourish, hydrate and protect your skin;

• 10ml Rose Hip (Rosa Moschata) Seed Oil – Rose hip seed oil is super regenerating, rejuvenating and healing and contains tretinoin (a form of Vitamin A) which helps to repair damaged skin, acne and reduce wrinkles and scars. It is also a good source of essential fatty acids (Omega’s 3 and 6), which assist with skin regeneration, and linolenic acid, which helps with UV damage, fine lines and wrinkles;
• 4 drops of therapeutic grade Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) Essential Oil – Lavender oil is perfect for any and all skin types, as well as being really good for mature skin, as it has powerful skin preserving qualities and also aids in the process of cell regeneration. It also has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, which can help to balance the skin. It is also really good for sufferers dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis and acne.
Avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy
;
• 4 drops of therapeutic grade Frankincense Essential Oil (Boswellia spp) – Frankincense is another great oil for having skin preserving and regenerating qualities, as it aids the process of skin cell regeneration. It can also improve skin tone, treat aging skin and reduce scar tissue.
Best to avoid in the first trimester of pregnancy
;
• 4 drops of therapeutic grade Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) Essential Oil – Geranium oil is fantastic for skin care, as it has antiseptic, astringent and balancing qualities, which are highly effective for the treatment of oily, greasy, congested and acne-prone skin (as even us 40-odd year olds get annoying spots!). It works by balancing the production of sebum (our skin’s natural oil), thereby making it suitable for dry, oily or combination skin.
Do not use in pregnancy
; and
• 10 ml of Vitamin E (Tocopheryl) Oil – Vitamin E is an essential nutrient with anti-inflammatory properties. It also helps to support the skins cell function and overall skin health. Importantly for this serum, Vitamin E is used as a stabilising agent, which means the serum will have a longer shelf life (around 4-6 months).

I put the coconut carrier oil, rose hip oil and Vitamin E oil in the bottle and gently swirl deosil (clockwise), all the time setting my intention for this serum to help keep my skin healthy, nourished and youthful. I then carefully (avoiding using too much essential oil, as some can be very harmful if used in excessive quantities) put in the 4 drops each of the lavender, frankincense and geranium essential oils, swirling after adding each one with the same intent.

This oil smells lovely, feels luxurious and treats my skin to a fabulous little indulgence a few times a week.
